Currently, we are looking for an Associate General Counsel to join the ArcBest team. The Associate General Counsel supervises the professional and non-professional employees or functions within the ArcBest Legal Department. Responsibilities may include legal areas such as litigation management, administrative, transactions, broad spectrum of contracts, statutory and regulatory compliance, intellectual property, criminal matters, governmental agencies, employment law, corporate governance, internet/technology, various claims, antitrust, insurance, bankruptcy, mergers and acquisitions, international law, and/or other areas. The Associate General Counsel is primarily responsible for specific clients and must have a thorough understanding of software applications and programs.

Your contribution may include:

  • Supervise legal team members and/or functions within the ArcBest Legal Department subject to direction of a Deputy General Counsel or the General Counsel.
  • Develop strategies for and manage various claims and litigation matters.
  • Develop strategies and participate in negotiation of various transactional matters.
  • Review, negotiate, draft, and finalize contracts.
  • Advise executives within ArcBest Corporation and its subsidiaries regarding legal risks in corporate matters/claims and how best to minimize such risk.
  • Lead employees in various departments and subsidiaries to reach corporate goals.
  • Review various situations and materials to ensure compliance with legal requirements and the best interest of the enterprise.
  • Develop solutions to complex legal and business questions.
  • Provide feedback and coaching to colleagues and/or team members to assist in learning and performance improvement.
  • Understand the Legal Department's responsibility and each legal member's role in contributing to the client's success.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and ensure goals and development plans are developed and discussed with direct reports.
  • Understand and act with the appropriate level of independence and discretion.
  • Build productive formal and informal working relationships and information channels within and across the organization.
  • Address client issues or requests in a timely fashion.
  • Complete multiple required tasks efficiently, quickly, and organized but able to re­prioritize on short notice to meet business needs and be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously with appropriate level of focus on each task.
  • Exercise appropriate discretion in determining what information is relayed via email, phone, and in person communications; ensure that conversations and sensitive legal issues take place in a confidential setting; understand the type of information that constitutes material non-public information" and ensure such information is safeguarded and only shared with those who have legitimate need to know.
  • Complete special projects as directed by a Deputy General Counsel and/or General Counsel.
  • Suggest enhancements in providing legal services to better meet client needs.
  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

As an Associate General Counsel, you will be a member of the ArcBest Legal team in Fort Smith, AR. Your hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with irregular hours that may occur depending on workload.

Education: Law degree from an ABA accredited law school.

Experience: Minimum, 8 years’ experience of increasing responsibility for general business and/or transportation law, preferred. Superior knowledge of transportation industry or defined areas within the transportation industry, preferred. Must have expertise in defined areas of legal practice and/or demonstrated ability to manage and lead a defined group of professional and non-professional staff. 

Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. 

Licensure: State license to practice law.
