Currently, we are looking for the next Assistant General Counsel to join the ArcBest team. General corporate and transportation law, including, but not limited to, litigation management, transactional, broad spectrum of contracts and contractual issues, intellectual property, criminal matters, governmental agencies, employment, corporate governance, internet/technology legal issues, various claims, antitrust, insurance, bankruptcy, mergers and acquisitions, and/or international laws. Depending on position, may involve supervision of small teams of other professional and/or non-professional employees. Primary responsibility for specific clients.

Your contribution may include:
  • Possible supervisory responsibility for a legal team or certain functions within the ArcBest Legal Department subject to oversight by an Associate General Counsel, Deputy General Counsels and/or the General Counsel.
  • Proficient in multiple areas of the law.
  • Develop strategies for and manage various litigation matters.
  • Develop strategies and participate in negotiation of various transactional matters.
  • Review, negotiate, draft and finalize contracts.
  • Advise executives within ArcBest and its subsidiaries at all levels regarding legal risks and how to minimize such risk.
  • Work with employees in various departments and subsidiaries to achieve corporate goals.
  • Review various situations and materials to insure compliance with legal requirements.
  • Develop solutions to complex legal questions.
  • Provide feedback and coaching to colleagues and/or team members to help them learn and improve their performance.
  • Understand your role, role of the team, and how such contributes to the legal department and our clients' success.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and development discussions with direct reports.
  • Build productive formal and informal working relationships and information channels within and across the organization.
  • Address client issues or requests in a timely fashion.
  • Use time effectively to accomplish assigned tasks; keep tasks well-organized but able to re­prioritize tasks on short notice to meet business needs; and be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously with appropriate level of focus on each task.
  • Exercise appropriate discretion in determining what information is relayed via email, phone, and in person communications; ensure that conversations and sensitive legal issues take place in a confidential setting; and understand the types of information that constitutes "material non-public information" and ensure such information is safeguarded and only shared with those who have legitimate need to know.
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned.
As the next Assistant General Counsel, you will be a member of the ArcBest Legal team. The shift hours are generally 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday with occasional irregular hours depending on workload.

Education:
  • JD Law Degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Experience:
    • 4 years experience in general business law and/or transportation law matters.
  • Computer Skills
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Knowledge of transportation industry or a defined area within the transportation industry.
    • Knowledge in defined areas of legal practice.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, both orally and in writing, and the ability to work individually and/or as a team member.
    • Ability to think in terms of abstract ideas.
    • Ability to find a solution for or to deal proactively with work-related problems.
    • Ability to develop a vision for the future and create a culture in which the long range goals can be achieved.
    • Ability to use thinking and reasoning to solve a problem.
    • Ability to utilize the available time to organize and complete work within given deadlines.
    • Understand business concepts and issues.
    • Proficient in use of a personal computer and necessary software.
  • Certifications:
    • Must be admitted to the practice of law in at least one state.
